St Neots & District

Welcome to St Neots & District U3A

The University of the Third Age (U3A) was founded in France in 1972 and was established in the UK in 1982. The U3A is a university in its original sense, where people meet together for the purpose of learning and passing their knowledge to others. There are no examinations and the only qualification is a desire to learn and/or teach others with similar interests, the U3A is a nationwide, worldwide organisation.

St Neots & District U3A is one of over 1000 branches in the United Kingdom, which in total have over 384,000 members.

So, welcome to St. Neots & District U3A. Our branch was formed in July 1998 and has grown over the last 18 years to one of the largest in the East of England. This is purely down to volunteers who have stepped forward under the banner of U3A and spread their knowledge and generated interest with other likeminded local people on the various subjects of interest that is the foundation of the U3A.

There were only a few groups to start with, but over the years the number has increased to cover many different subjects, and some have grown into similar themed groups in order for them not to grow too large, we currently have over 50 groups.

St Neots & District U3A currently has over a thousand members, but this changes by the week in the winter months, and by the day in the summer at the start of the new membership year.

New members are always welcome to attend our Monthly Meetings held in the Great Hall of the Priory Centre on the 3rd Tuesday of the Month. This meeting is usually attended by approximately 230 of our members. Sadly, we do not have a larger venue in town to cater for larger numbers.

This monthly event is where members meet to find out what’s coming up over the forthcoming months in respect of trips, outings and other functions. We have a speaker each month who comes in and tells us interesting stories, followed by tea and coffee and a chance to sit and talk to old friends and indeed, make new friends and meet members new to the U3A. Generally, U3A is not widely advertised, I lived in the town for 25 years or more before I had heard of it.

Our Monthly News Sheet is distributed at this meeting which again informs members of things happening at group level, any special events taking place within the individual groups and any new groups being evolved. All our members with email addresses, receive it through our Beacon Membership Management System.

Please visit the various pages of this website by clicking the buttons above. The web pages give details of our growing number of groups and activities; also, details of future trips, outings, theatre and concert visits, holidays etc. and information on how to join our U3A.

Our Publications Team and Committee like to keep the website up to date so please contact the Web Administrator if any of the information on this website is incorrect.

Kindest regards.
