Monthly Meeting

From October 2023, while BIC is being altered, Our Monthly Meetings are being held at Bede Tower on the Second Friday of the month.
We can arrive from 09:30 a.m. with the meeting starting at 10:30 a.m.

We usually start with a short business meeting when members are updated on National and Local U3A news and developments. Several of the Group Coordinators also report details of forthcoming events. This is followed by a talk from an invited speaker.

Potential members are always welcome and information about our U3A is available from committee members.

Bennelli's Cafe in the Museum and Winter Gardens has CLOSED.

It is thought appropriate to visit Doreen at her flat in small numbers
(usual max should be 3 people).

There may be difficulty going to Doreen's flat due to possibly not getting an answer.

Best is to advise Christa of your intention to go a few days before.

We are convinced that Doreen would like some company.

"Coffee Mornings" could occur on any day members are available.

This talk looks at the origin and nature of some of the amazing rocks that have built, decorated and protected Sunderland over the centuries.

(As a geologist since the 1960s Andy has worked in Cornwall, South Wales and Africa. For the past 40 years he has been teaching geology at various levels in Sunderland and is still trying to retire despite the best efforts of his students!)

A potted history of the three statutory new towns established in County Durham; Newton Aycliffe in 1947, Peterlee in 1948 and Washington in 1964; their objectives and progress through the decades, and impact on the north east as a whole up to and after their closures in 1988.


(Ged - originally from Manchester- came to work for Washington Development Corporation after starting his professional career in Telford New Town. He was responsible for commercial market research and took part in negotiations with some of the biggest investments in the later years of the new town. In the final years of the Corporation he was the trade union chair involved in its run down and the transfer of functions to other authorities.)
