Message from the outgoing chair Paul Grierson

This past year has seen Churchdown u3a make a strong recovery following the end of the COVID lockdown. We have not only maintained our numbers, but have increased out membership.

The groups under our various leaders/convenors continue to offer our members a variety of interest groups and are well supported. We have seen the start up of new interest groups and our monthly meetings are well attended. My thanks to our speaker secretary who has provided us with an interesting selection of speakers and of course our volunteer catering crew have excelled themselves in providing refreshments.

I am confident that with our new committee we will continue to see growth within our u3a.

Paul Grierson (Chair)

Message from incoming Chair Robbie Philip

I would like to thank Paul for his hard work and dedication in his time as Chair. All of our previous Chairs have built on the strong foundations that have been left by their predecessor and my wish is to continue along these lines. As Paul intimated, we have a very strong and committed committee whose aim is to continue the growth that has been achieved in previous years.

We hold a monthly Group Meeting in the Churchdown Community Centre on the 3rd Wednesday of each month (excluding August) at 2 pm. Our Speaker Secretary, Jenny Cotton, provides us with a wide variety of very interesting Talks. After an initial welcome from the Chair, the Speaker then Talks on his/her chosen subject for about 45 minutes followed by tea/coffee and socialising. All members are very welcome to attend and for this financial year it is free.

Story Telling Opportunity on BBC Radio
=================================
I recently received the following email (see below) from Adam Crowther, a presenter on BBC Local Radio and wonder if any of our members would be interested in the offer. It seems like an excellent opportunity for anyone wishing to air their talents on local radio.

Robbie Philip
Chair

Hello,
I’m getting in touch because I found your email associated with a group that I think your members might benefit from an exciting opportunity I can offer. I know that the U3A have some great groups that could benefit from the opportunities below. Creative writing, poetry, theatre etc.

I’m the presenter of a programme on Local BBC Radio called Upload – it’s a show that champions emerging writers, poets, comedians, theatre makers… I could go on! But basically, anyone creative can submit their work to the BBC as an audio or video recording and we could feature them on air as part of the show! Maybe some of your writers would fit the bill or would want to be featured to a wider audience?

We’ve had writers who have uploaded to us, been picked to feature on air and then had book publishers get in touch with them to offer book deals and audio book series offers too! So it could prove worthwhile for any of your writers! Equally, we’re keen to hear from writers who just enjoy writing as a hobby and might want their stories to have a platform to be showcased on.

We’d love to hear from writers who are at any level.

Here are some tips on how to submit to us.

1. Pick a short story or an extract from something longer (we’d love 3-5mins max)
2. Find a quiet room to record yourself reading it (soft furnished rooms like living rooms work best)
3. Record yourself using an audio recording app on your smartphone – if you slip up, don’t worry, just head back a line and re-read it – we can edit slips out for you
4. Head to bbc.co.uk/upload – click the big Upload button
5. Select where you live from the list
6. Submit your audio with some information about yourself and your story in the description box
7. DONE!

Do let me know if there are any questions!

Adam

Churchdown u3a COVID policy determined at Monthly Meeting 22nd September 2021

Please see below

We are mostly all double vaccinated. Some members for whatever reason have chosen not to be vaccinated or cannot for medical reasons. This has caused worries in some groups. We consulted National Office and they indicated that we should, as an independent u3a, make our own decisions. In the interests of the safety of all members a policy must be established. The proposal from the Chair is that only double vaccinated members may attend indoor groups, and the leader of the group can ask to see certificates of vaccination in the event of any doubt. This was seconded by Anne Johnston from the floor. No-one made any comments, and a vote was taken, passing this proposal unanimously. This is now the policy of Churchdown u3a.
